Sun Safety

As the summer months roll in and the weather gets hotter, new moms must figure out how exactly to protect their precious little one from the dangerous sun rays. As a new mom you may know that protecting your little one from the sun is important, but what you might not know is that sun safety goes beyond applying sunscreen (although that is important too). There are many precautions you need to take in order to ensure your baby is safe from the sun including the time of day and amount of time spent in the sun, clothing choice, SPF strength and more! We have listed a few helpful tips below to make sure you and your baby are prepared!

Sun Safety Tips:

  • Keep them shaded. Whenever you are outside be sure there is a way you can keep your little one in the shade. This could be a stroller shade, umbrella, hat or even just sitting under a tree! *Remember that just because it’s not sunny outside doesn’t mean your baby can’t get burned*
  • Cool Clothing. Yes, a baby bathing suit might be cute, but you need to make sure that your little one is covered. You can try looking for UV protected swimwear or just stick to lightweight and light-colored clothing. Don’t forget the hat and sunglasses!
  • Sunscreen! Okay, you probably knew this one was coming. Make sure that you are using the correct SPF for your baby, and that you re-apply it throughout the day to ensure total coverage. Check out these baby-approved sunscreens from Parents.com. Tip: When applying be sure to get all areas covered, meaning the ears, neck and feet!
  • Timing is Everything. Figure out the weather for the day, and plan your time outside accordingly. Starting your play-day at the park in the morning before the sun is out in full force, you may save your baby from sunburn! Remember to soak up the FUN and not the sun when it comes to your little one. J
